Ancient Egyptian writing uses more than 25 characters in comparison to English that has 26 letters. Hieroglyphics could represent a sound, object, or ideas. Vowels are not normally written in hieroglyphics. Most times we read Hieroglyphics from right to les Instead of writing a word or phrase with multiple alphabet characters you write a bilateral. Bilaterals are hieroglyphics which were substituted in place of multiple alphabet characters. The only way we today were able to know about ancient Egyptians is since we found the Rosetta stone. The Rosetta stone was made of three languages. We were able to see what each word was in hieroglyphics by reading it first in greek. The hieroglyphics were lost for more than 1,500 years before the Rosetta stone was found.
