Diversity in Media

Media role has changed drastically over the last few decades. With the invention of internet, people have become more aware of the surrounding and cultures and the portrayal of different cultures are more accurate than ever before. One can easily find cultural diversity in many articles, television shows, and magazines but the portrayal of this diversity has become more politically correct. People are paying close attention to the view of certain races on the media and to avoid any problems some aspects of certain cultures are completely ignored. Depending on a person’s sex, religion, race, they usually see the differences in how diverse the media can really be. People have a hard time getting past the words and looking into the real meaning of what someone might be saying or portraying. Some people also see at what one might say as being a negative look of a certain group but the person saying it may have a totally different meaning to their portrayal of a certain group. Diversity is a very important part in today’s society and people need to take into hand that there is not just one race, sex, religion, etc. and that there are many different people out in the world that may be offended by many different things. Diversity is especially important for the kids of our generation as well because they will grow up seeing all these races on all these different tv shows instead of just one race. It is very important to see that is a variation of different ethnic cultures in today’s society so diversity in popular entertainment should be promoted to better reflect people in the general population.

Depending on a person’s sex, religion, race, people usually see the differences in how diverse the media can really be. There are a lot of movies or tv show roles that people try to take a part of but there are some many requirements that are involved on getting that one role. People were not really concerned about the diversity in today’s society until the 2016 Oscar awards came along. People were shocked to find out that there were no black nominees on that year’s award. People protested saying that it was not fair and the people of colour felt like represented enough by that. The research found that people of color are underrepresented. Out of 665 top directors, 31 are black and 20 are Asian. Non-black or non-Asian directors tend to make more than one film at a higher percentage than black or Asian directors. 29 percent of black directors made more than one film, compared with 43.5 percent of non-black directors. And 35 percent of Asian directors made more than one film, compared with 43.1 percent of non-Asian directors. When it comes to diversity, that just means ethnic groups or races, it could also mean sex’s as well. Women are also underrepresented. There are only 43 unique female directors, and of those 43, seven are women of color. Diversity in media matters because accurately representing criticized groups of people in positive lights brings people together and also displays that sense of belonging that we all crave. We all find comfort in seeing people who look like us on platforms that are important and influential because it makes us feel like we are not invisible in society.
Diversity is a very important part in today’s society and people need to take into hand that there is not just one race, sex, religion, etc. and that there are many different people out in the world that may be offended by many different things. Diversity in media has grown over the years, but many still place minorities in demeaning stereotypes or lesser roles. We are so affected by media, from movies to social apps, they all have had some type of impact on our lives, and now there is a new generation growing up in a society that holds those things in high importance. Which is why diversity now, is more important than ever. We have been so conditioned to see caucasian men and women in leading roles that whenever we see someone other than those as the stars of films or television shows, we act as though it’s a blessing rather than what should be happening in the first place. Our world is full of color and shape and for a long time that wasn’t represented, slowly we are starting to see a more realistic society being showcased in modern media. Different cultures and people are being invested in and are creating an unexpected profit.

Diversity is especially important for the kids of our generation as well because they will grow up seeing all these races on all these different tv shows instead of just one race. As children, many of us re-enacted our favorite stories growing up and can recall fondly the fictional characters that every kid on the playground aspired to be. On the daily basis, the world is overwhelmed by mass media, it’s either by music, movies, TV shows, magazines, books, it’s a never ending cycle of constant entertainment. People want to see themselves portrayed in the media that they see. The lack of diversity has great effects, especially on children. Minority children are left out of the self-validating privilege of seeing themselves as the hero of a TV show, movie, or book. However, mass media is taking a small step towards fixing this situation. Examples of this new found diversity are the children’s series “Doc McStuffins,” the increasing amount of minority protagonists in Marvel movies, and new TV shows featuring minority casts. This is a huge step for the television scene to take, because it affects the diversity in communities, and it affects how accepting the majority is of minorities. Diversity in mass media extends the importance of criticized groups to society.
